Environmental issue poster?!

Mon Oct 16, 2006, 9:45 AM
Trying to create an "environmental issue poster" for class with integrated type and imagery that has an immediate impact from 6 feet away, bold, simple and easy to read.

EDIT:
Final poster is finished:

Photographic adventures

Sat Oct 14, 2006, 10:16 PM
...of my numerous trips around Toronto and other places with my friends/photographers/models.

Are now saved for all eternity in this account:
www.alexius.deviantart.com

Go visit it... Lots of stuff coming into it.

:iconalexius: :iconalexius: :iconalexius::iconalexius: :iconalexius:

That old account had always haunted me, but now it just might be put into some sort of use... if I don't snap soon due to the lack of print account in that account.

Soon enough I'll probably go insane from the "double-account"/split personality madness.

BLAAAAH or the general V5 complains

Wed Aug 30, 2006, 7:56 AM

Something horribly wrong with V5 DA.

Check your pageviews people.
Everyone's daily pageviews dropped way down by half ever since August 25th.

Front page is broken to hell. Since when is a piece with 1 fav popular, just because it's in some silly category like "avatars" or "desktops".

My Chronoscape story got corrupt and cut off.
The book cover image isn't even showing anymore. I'm gonna have to re-upload it as art now.

Whenever I click on something, comments get blatantly cut off until I reload...
and I'm using Firefox!

hopefully they'll fix all this before I go insane and start killing people with spoons...

copyright infringement -resolving

Mon Aug 14, 2006, 6:56 AM
update-

I've finally got through via email to the artist responsible for the theft of my artwork
...and we're discussing terms.

He's already sincerely apologized for the theft.
I'm happy to have finally gotten through to the right person, via multitudes of websites.

Thank you everybody, for first of all noticing the theft, being witnesses and helping me find him!

Hello my dear art colleagues,

Today I've been notified by my kind fan :iconairage:

That the following concert in Hamburg, Germany has hired an unknown designer that stole my artwork for their fliers!

The flier:

www.breakbeatz.de/phpBB/img/fl…

Obviously ripped off my artwork "Enter the Inferno"
www.deviantart.com/deviation/3…

UPDATE: this case has been resolved. The concert organizers and the designer in question has issued an apology and compensated me for the work.

Illustration Rates!

Thu Aug 3, 2006, 9:10 AM
I'm assembling a grand booklet of general illustration prices that all artists could view and follow, to help them out with the sale of their artworks.
I shall have to mention all mediums and all types of illustrations and their current market value.
Sure, there's some books that help with that, but screw buying books. We're all starving artists.
Lets get something together that helps everybody out with the sale of their artworks!
Mention any artwork that you've done and what you've charged the client for it!

So far my search turned out various websites that help out with illustration prices/rates/ideas (examples of what various artist charge for creation of their art):
www.freelancers.com/webaffil/p…
www.io.com/unigames/rates.html
www.junkertoons.com/books.htm
www.illustratorsireland.com/ar…
www.buttonzup.com/rates.htm
www.vegaswebgraphics.com/prici…
adamstrange.com/website-6.0/RA…

However there's still a lot to decide on, such as general comic book pagerates, selling artwork copyright, value of artist's experiece, and all sorts of other mediums.
If you know of any other such websites/usefull resources- post them! If you have any suggestions, post them too!

Heat wave

Mon Jul 17, 2006, 3:18 PM
A lovely heat wave of doom ate Toronto right up, with me at its downtown center. Weeee.
I don't have an air conditioner, and just waiting till everybody blows the city's power grid out again with theirs. That would be quite hilarious.
Who here's from Toronto? Anyone remember the last big country-wide power cascade?
Trying to invent new ways to stay cool. Sitting in a shirt soaked in cold water seems to work so far.
Anyone know of ways how to stay cool without eating power up with AC's?

Also, working on my sci-fi novel, and looking for publishers:
Read it here, if you haven't:

Tuna!

Tue Jun 20, 2006, 11:06 AM
Tired of corporate clients bulshitting me.

What the hell kind of crap is a nice, detailed illustration for 20 dollars?
and... "Oooo, la di da... you get recognition"
Recognition is worth nothing at the moment! I need to buy bread... and tuna!
I can't come to the store and tell them:
"Hello, I'm recognized, do you know me? Now give me free bread!"

thus, the world, according to the diluted mind of those that pay with recognition:

Give artists either a fair price 13-25 dollars an hour, or a percentage of the total profit!
I'm tired of listening to bullshit about eventual recognition or eventual payment in the years to come.

Artists, stop cheaping out! If somebody asks you to work for less than 10 dollars an hour, tell them to go draw it themselves! Stop lowering your own market price value.

Artists, always ask whom the copyright of the image belongs to, after its done!
Don't sell out the rights to your art for little profit!
Always demand to maintain the right to publish the image yourself!

An interesting article to relate to:

Clarity

Mon Jun 19, 2006, 2:02 PM
Mood: the silver shade of gray
.
.
.
.

...and now I see with eyes unclouded

...and there is nothing I can do, to change what has occured.
And there's nothing I can do to help her or to help myself.
I thought that happiness could only be attained together.
How very wrong was I?
And this is my goodbye…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes there's no action
Sometimes there's no cause
Sometimes there's no distinction
Between the why and because.

Sometimes the way is clear
Sometimes the path is lost
Sometimes the world is full of cheer
Sometimes too great is the cost

~

There once was a guy, that was lost.
Along the darkness and light he walked
Without purpose
Without cause
Without knowing what love is like,

Along came a girl and showed him the way.
And he fell in love, he gave her his world.
But she had to work for her family, aye.
But she had to support those she loved,
So she let him go
Yes she let him go
And he was broken inside, alas!
What else could one expect from such an action, thus?

Because he failed to understand
Because he failed and made out to pretend
That everything was
That everything is
That everything could be fixed and solved
That all could be aligned to perfection

But sometimes we just can't help ourselves,
But sometimes we just refuse to accept
When others help us,
To love and be happy
And to understand
The why and because,
The reason and cause
The action/reaction
That brings down the toll
We chose to forget all that we know
We chose to disband all that has passed
To burn all the bridges behind
To run away from it all
Just merely to exist
Just merely to dance
Between the horizons
Of darkness and light
Between the illusion and realities of life

Sometimes there's no choice
Sometimes there's no light
Sometimes there's no action
Upon which to decide
That one can see
Because the world has made one blind

Sometimes our fortunes turn
And one can walk in light
And just see the darkness
In an infernal plight

Sometimes the world is clear
And one walks in the dark
But all that one sees,
Are the stars everbright.

O' what am I to do?
What future awaits me?
Who am I destined to become?

Darkness

Thu Jun 15, 2006, 11:16 AM
My love fell from the sky into my arms and then left me for dead.

Metal shells for my unmoving eyes and weeds for my tied tongue, torn drums for broken ears.
I've become the embodiment of a machine, unstoppable, fear-less and sharp. I see the world as a fake façade, a masquerade, a decoration of pretty colors, and a hollow illusion, through which I cannot break.
Last night I've died. And as I woke, I had no fear, because he, who is already dead, has no fear of death, no feeling of pain and no regrets.
I've stated to listen to blasting rock music to block out my dark thoughts of despair and confusion.
I drove 150 on the highway without fear.
I have become the embodiment of a soul-less man, frozen from the inside out, neither living nor dead.

I have gambled too much and lost. I gave her everything I've had.

Existence is without purpose...
Until I can find somebody else to give my love to.

I'm working on a Moby Dick novel illustration for university and I be requiring your most humble opinion on my idea, before I begin drawing it.
Anyway here it is (updated version):

Foreground-
The crazy captain Ahab standing in a small boat, with a few crewmen rowing. He holds the telescope, as suggested by :iconhorusrogue: Other crewmen hold harpoons.
Giant waves are thrashing the small wooden boat around.

Farther off in distance:
The storm is covering the entire ocean, stormy sky curves around the scene. The sun is barely visible through the clouds, and is letting a few rays fall onto the white whale.
The large Sail ship is burning in the background, splitting in two and sinking.

Whale is barely visible in the looking glass.

... anyhow, if you've read this crazy story called Moby Dick, tell me if the illustration will work well enough...
or maybe you have a more jolly idea? Feel free to throw it at me, then and I shall be much thankful.

UPDATE:
Initial drawing is completed. Gave the captain a looking glass, made it less "overused" view.
Still lots of things to draw. Bleh!

Yet another rant about DA doom

Bahumbug!

It seems that we've all been gravely betrayed.
Or at least I assume we was!

I just discovered that old artworks no longer show up in watchers list when they are updated.

Why was this feature removed?
I've severely updated some of my old artworks with at least 40 hours of work and I get no new comments or views on them, just because they no longer show up to my delectable watchers as new releases.
Who is responsible for removing this feature?
Do I have to delete all the old artworks that I've updated and upload them as new ones, so people see the update?!
Why are artworks no longer showing up as updates to watchers when prints are released?
How are the watchers supposed to know about new released prints, if the site doesn't even note them?!
The horror is unimaginable.....

There should just be a simple checkmark, when you update stuff- a checkmark that says whether your watchers should be notified of the update- just like the one in a journal!
I see quite a few forum posts in "suggestions" forum on this exact issue, but nobody seems to care to add this option for some reason. Looks like it's much easier to just completely CUT OFF all the old artwork updates, rather then install a simple checkmark.

Tell the people... note the admins. The horror must be stopped.

Anyhow... since nobody is notified of my latest print releases and old artwork updates, here are the most important ones:

What happens when things are taken too seriously:

My brilliant plot of trying to rescue my blue avatar from inevitable doom:

Has turned rather sour...

Following in violation after, violation-

I've been found guilty due to attacks on individuals and thus...

and before I am surely banned, I bid you all my final adieu...
...or not...

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

My jolly blue avatar:

was deleted for "being in violation of dA policies on avatars, please read":
help.deviantart.com/214/

What the bloody hell?!
Is this a new policy, cause I seem to remember quite a few of "nude" featuring avatars here.
What about all the other nude avatars that the nude stock artists have?
Their avatars are as "bad" as mine.

I want my avatar back....
:stab:
Since when has it been illegal to post a TINY 50x50 avatar of a painted woman without any features?
You can see plenty of nude paintings in museums these days. Sensoring avatars like mine is idiotic.
Freedom of avatars for all!

I shall crusade for the return of my avatar, till justice has been served on the plate of truth.

To question the issue of nude avatars, I've started a hilarious poll about it.

This is bout as silly as my PANTS war story, anyway:

Severely doomed

Thu Nov 3, 2005, 4:49 PM
Autumn has come....

Good news-

New website is finally finished-
www.svitart.com

Bad news-

Thanks to my local Ontario government I'm 20'000 dollars in debt.
And for what? For going to university!
Not for gambling, not for owning a car or a house, but just for learning.
I've literally become the essence of a starving artist.

If it goes any farther I'll loose my room and have to file for bankruptcy.
They're doing anything short of threatening to break my kneecaps.

I'm taking any and all kinds of commissions!

Book covers, illustrations, creative ideas, you name it!
I'll do anything from digital portraits to digital landscapes -
illustrating your new novel, or creating a scene you visualized is a can do!

Commission bounty can be made via a money order or perhaps through paypal.com
My paypal address is: doctor_vit@hotmail.com

Note me, name a price and I'll do it!

Please, save me and the kitty from terrible starvation.

email -Scammer's paradise

Thu Oct 20, 2005, 9:26 AM
A rather unexpected junk mail recieved.

Today's mysterious email was:

elijahmoorestore2@yahoo.com

Hi
i was looking at a sample of your work and i was impressed at the creativity of your work and i will like to see all your works so let me know where i can view all your works and i was thinking of ordering but i will like to know whether you can sell to me and ship it to West Africa for me,so please i will need to hear from you in regards to this and to know your mode of payment cause i was thinking i send you my credit card number # and the expire date to charge for my order to make our business faster but not throught paypal, but i will awaite to hear from you with your opinion.
Sincerly
Elijah Moore

Well, I was rather happy, about reading it, until I hit the West Africa and credit card part.
Doing my usual google check on Mr Elijah Moore's actions around the world I have discovered that a few different artists have been hit with this email, requesting purchases from "children's giraffe drawings" to "sketch of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", eventually ending with nothing but a scam.

Conclusions drawn:
1) No self-respecting buyer will write sentences without capital letters or dots, speaking like a zombie, repeating EXACTLY the same email to many artists worldwide.
2) Interested in a range of artworks WAY TOO wide
3) Offering instant strange credit card (usually referred to as "My american friend's card"), scared of Paypal

4) The name is known as "artist scammer" around the net

…and I thought that email scammers couldn't get any more low, but picking on poor starving artists like me is just outrageous.

University has ended

Sat Oct 1, 2005, 12:41 AM
And so it has ended...

The war has ended ladies and gentlemen.
Our causalities were great, and our victory was rather unexpected.
For on the very day that the cubiclemaster declared our cubicle free for the claiming by our group, I have transferred out of the Environmental Design program.

And now to recuperate upon the events that have led to this crazy end...

Upon my arrival at my main class, I was faced with a small presentation on my hotel design.
I presented my glorious environmental ideas about:
Having architecture that is not limited by the rules of the city,
and having a building that does not take away energy and does not dirty the land, dump garbage or pollute the air.
I told about the novel ideas of:
Cooling the building with -4 degree (constantly cold) water from the lake ontario
Having silver plating that transfers heat from the sun into the building's interior
Living machines that would clean the building's water and beautify its interiors with plants
Recycling plant that takes care of all the building's garbage.
Spiral staircases, elevating people by themselves- powered by wind turbines that are propelled by the constant harsh wind in the concrete core of Toronto downtown.
Lighting systems that work without electricity.
Curved interiors filled with plants and walls that breathe, without duct pipes....

Well, the teacher did not listen. He cut off me rather abruptly and stated that this (our year's main project) was not about architecture, it was about interior design.
Design that is bound by the rules of the city, build upon fossil fuel burning cars and linearity.
Design that destroys land and pollutes air!

He spat on my spiral staircases, stating that he has a phobia of spiral staircases.
I stared at him in, resisting the urge to stab him in the eye with a pencil.

What kind of an architecture teacher has a phobia of spiral staircases?!

He cut out my all plants, saying that it's much better to have a "representation" of a plant, for example- a plastic plant, or even better yet- a beam!
I pondered whether when he was young he tripped on a plant and fell down a spiral staircase.
This seemed like a good explanation of his dislike for such things.

He squared off my rooms, stating that square rooms are much better for humans, because they can organize space better, seeing all those angles.

I argued for that people themselves are not square, but rather curved and that living nature has no perfectly square designs, but again was shot down with some kind of curved room phobia response.

I walked out of the class a broken man...

On the next day, our class was supposed to be sketching plans of an old Georgian 19century building, and counting the bricks one by one, to find out its height.
The teacher was excited about it, like counting bricks was his idea of the most fun thing in the world.

The skies of Toronto opened up, and in their fury cast down torrents of weeping rain upon the city, drowning it.

The drawing of plans was cancelled, thankfully, for I started to resent the thought of counting bricks for no damn good reason. Fate it seems stood against me working as an interior designer- which is exactly what the monsters in administration made our program into, cutting out all architecture from this year.

I have not yet received a single interior design job and yet created a few paid for illustrations and a bundle of neat digital paintings.
Thunder shook the city and the clouds unlocked their hold on my mind.

This was to be the turning point.
No longer looking back, I walked into the design office... and handed in my resignation from the Environmental Design Program.

As the final touch, I have signed the papers and transferred into the Illustration program, no longer a designer earning to be a master architect, but an artist of virtue, relying on fate to take me farther into the future.

Univeristy has begun

Sat Sep 10, 2005, 10:33 PM
And so it has begun....

Back to the spiral.
3rd year.

The time is passing swiftly, yet it doesn't get to anywhere.
Summer has escaped and the winter is arriving, crushing everything in its path.
Each day grows colder and the waters of Ontario are dimmer and more freezing everyday.
It's becoming rather complicated to swim in it.
I will persist as long as I can.

Hanging on to the last memories of summer, I venture forth into the wasteland of Toronto downtown.
Here I once met the beautiful :iconvoodoobiatch: during a warm, summer day. T'was lots of good fun.
Now, however I'm alone in the middle of this capitalistic paradise.
A castaway in the crowd.
Today the sky is gray and uncertain.
Clouds of doom hang over the city.

I'm wearing all white as a fashion statement against the gray-ness of the city.

A war for office desks has begun at our university.
There are 100 desks and 500 people in the working area.
People are claiming desks with tape and paper with their names, complaining to teachers, stealing chairs, etc.
Here are some notes from the war journal:

September 8th
7am
Our small group of designers (3 people including me) managed to tear off somebody's claim from a desk, somewhat close to the window and put up our own names.
There are 3 walls around this cubicle, it is fairly secure.
On the side there's a drawing board, which is good for drawing of plans.
What tomorrow holds I do not know, for our position is weak and most deadly.
8am
A teacher responsible for desks "cubiclemaster" made a lecture on importance of the signup sheet and not grabbing desks. Nobody listened. People are scared and fighting for desks even worse. There have been a few verbal fights and people are tearing papers off and gluing on their own.
The hour grows dark.

September 9th
7am
I've brought a gigantic, 50 pound stack of magazines to the desk and threw them all around it to support my territorial claim. As well a few other items were brought: stack of papers on ergonomics that was taped to the cubicle walls, a plant to put on the desk, stack of pens and pencils, postcards from Russia, frames with pictures, and a wooden plaque with our names that I've hammered onto the cubicle wall with a few nails.
Lets see those bastards pry that off.

10am
After returning from class, a horrible thing had happened.
The enemy had struck while I was away!
Some bastards stole our left wall and the drafting board.
Now there's a giant gap where it all used to be.
The whole row has been moved more left, leaving us with less space.
I sat down on my crumbling, squeaky chair and wept, for our loss was great.

11am
I haven't slept in 3 days.
Almost fell asleep in class. My eyes kept closing. The teacher kept talking about measuring bricks manually, like counting bricks was his idea of fun.
I weighted my hammer, pondering about how big of a hole I can make in his forehead, to silence his nagging.

12pm
A bold and most devilish teacher approached our garrison and made demands of our surrender.
He claimed that we have no right to occupy this cubicle and that we have no permission from the cubiclemaster to make a stand here.
I told him that I heard the cubiclemaster utter that the 4th years can stay.
He made more demands and said that it doesn't apply to us, and then left angrily.
I only hope that he does not come back on Monday with reinforcements.
Dear god, don't let it be so.
We'll hold on to our position till our last breath.

I've consulted with the cubicle occupants across us, and they've told me to stop listening to crazy chaps and hold position.

I've told my men to stay strong and do not loose hope.
However, I myself fear that all may be lost.
