I am a happy artist who pays his rent thanks to FREE exhibitions of my work on the internet, including this awesome website.
My art and comic book ([link] is now famous around the world because people share the images I create through blogs, torrents, wallpapers and re-posts.

I allow everyone to download and view my paintings and comic book for free on the internet. If someone who likes the digital version of my painting wants to buy a printed version, they pay me or a publisher who's authorised to print my work, which in turn cuts me a % from the print sales of this painting. At the same time I can put up a couple of nice, non-intrusive commercials into my online exhibitions that I myself approve of, and that will pay for the rest of my expenses.

I believe the same "Free digital content" policy should apply to all digital media arts. If the public likes the content, they WILL buy a solid copy of it from the artist. There are people who will love, cherish and support the artist as a thank you for providing them with with high-quality entertainment. They are always there and they will not dissapear. They are an artist's "true fans".
Just take a look on youtube. If a channel is famous and sucessfull, the fan army will feed the youtube artist and give them ANYTHING they desire- any paints, any tools, any props, and free home in any city. How do I know this? Because this is my lifestyle. Thanks to sucess of my Romantically Apocalyptic comic, I am now doing a tour around the world so that I can meet the fans, sell more prints and include views of cities I visit into my comic.

On the other side-
A lot of Hollywood movies are made because of money, not because there's an original script out there.
When digital content becomes paid for "before viewing", this only feeds an army of middlemen, creating "IDIOCRACY ASS MOVIE SUPERCONTENT" that has no artistic value. An example of this is every shitty, vapid movie Hollywood has ever released that made tons of money. Such movies make money not because they are artistic, but because they were marketed and sold sucesfully by this army of salespeople. These salespeople were able to decieve the buyers and fans with pretty trailers or relation to something that the fans like such as their favourite character.

Online media sharing supports the artists by giving them true fans.
True Fans = just the right amout of money and services for the artist, so that they can create more art.
Buying a cd before enjoying all the tracks doesn't create better content, it creates a sales machine of greed, power and money + exhobirantly famous artists with 30 bedroom mansions. Will a 30 bedroom mansion make the artist more talented and help them produce better work? No. This creates waste and greed.
Only creative ideas and hard work produces amazing art. So keep on creating art and sharing it for the whole world to see. Don't give up and don't surrender your talent to a soul-less corporate machine. Don't be afraid of failure, just keep on trying and creating.
If you share your results with the world, you too will live happily ever after.

One other comment because I left out movies. The most popular movie downloads are also breaking box office records. I have seen the stats to prove this but you can look it up if you don't believe me and care. There's no denying that downloading movies takes some money out of the hands of the people who made it. But with box office records still being broken, I think people who want to go to the movies will still go and take the family or spouse or for a date. The people who download them are not likely to go in the first place. When they say millions or billion or whatever they say are being lost is not true. Just because something gets downloaded, that doesn't equal a lost sale. This is true for art, music, movies & software. Some people download because they can't afford to buy it. This is not an excuse, but this kind of download can not claim a lost sale because it would have never been purchased in the first place. When someone downloads something they would have never bought, this is not a loss in any way to the manufacturer, unless the downloader some how used the bandwidth of said producer. It's not like taking a physical item that must be made or grown again. It's just a copy that someone has and in no way depletes the stock of an item.

I think that was very well put. I believe sharing through the internet is a great way to improve exposure. I don't purchase very much art but there has never been anything that I downloaded and didn't purchase because I did so. I don't buy a lot of music but for the last several years, ALL of the music I bought was stuff I discovered on the internet and wouldn't have known about it any other way.

As an artist I am ashamed to say that my support towards other artists is not that great. I generally only view the art online. However that is mostly because I never find one artist I love more than anyone else. I guess, that if I did find someone I thought were amazing and awesome I might consider buying a copy of their art book or comic book so that I could show my support.

However when it comes to music it's a different story. I remember listening to of Jack Johnson music online for maybe a year or so. Eventually I checked which songs were on which album and to my joy I found all my favourites on the same album. I then decided to show my support by actually buying the CD.

I'm not sure why I act differently towards art (paintings/drawings) and music. You'd think I'd be more supportive to artists considering the fact that my passion is art. I guess that the fact that I prefer to buy things from stores IRL rather than buying something online contributes to this fact a great deal.

The whole art is based on copying, modifying, editing and improving.
