Lifehacks?

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 6, 2017, 4:21 PM
Today I discovered a way to obtain infinite wood!

How, you might inquire?

Just locate a business near you that sells pallets like these:

They throw out/give away broken or old pallets everyday!

With some DIY art creativity (or refs/plans from Pinterest), these old palettes can be turned into fences, patio furniture, and even a backyard shed (I already built a small shed today for mah ancient lawnmower).

Lifehack #2: I also know of a way to obtain infinite flowers for projects like these:

Just visit a local events/weddings hall/chapel on their recycling day.
After ceremonies are done, some of them literally throw away boatloads of plastic flowers.

What are your lifehacks?

Never pay for boxes for moving. Most retail and fast food places will let you dig through their recycling/trash bins for the boxes. I find that Burger King and McDonald's provide the sizes of boxes that are easiest to pick up when moving heavy items like books.

And for leatherworking, buying leather can be very expensive. In the US we have a thrift store chain called Goodwill, and it has clearance centers. Whenever clothing stays on the racks too long and doesn't sell at their regular stores, it gets sent to the city's clearance center and taken off the hangers, and is thrown in gigantic piles on top of the tables. Anything you want on those tables is sold by the pound (usually $1.29 or something, much cheaper than the $14.99 per pound that leathercraft or fabric shops sell their leather for). So I buy up old purses and old leather jackets and cut them up for leather. For example, I made the armpieces, boots, pouch and water bottle holder for this costume out of reclaimed leather:  Yan Da - Full Costume by Arienne-Keith

Also for the US -- the Fry's grocery store chain (a Kroger chain) is cheaper than Walmart. And they treat their employees better.

And companies and other large organizations (university surplus especially) are great places to get scrap electronics and things like that if you're building cyberpunk costumes. I've also picked up old damaged screens and stuff from that Goodwill clearance center too. Just be very careful about the lead in them -- wear gloves and an N95 or better respirator, and Lead-Off wipes to remove any lead dust that lands on your skin or working surface (because normal soap doesn't remove lead). Some companies will also get rid of old monitors that still work, so if you wanted a second or third monitor (screen) for your computer, that's a cheap way to get one.

Try lurking about large stores backalleys, like malls or shopping centers. Then locate the trash bins for reciclable stuff. If you check inside you'll find all sorts of perfectly good articles which are just thrown away because they are chipped, slightly cracked or their boxes look aged or bent. You can scoop those out with a hook but don't take long doing it, because a couple of security guards will surely show up and inquire as to your intentions there. As you are not doing anything illegal (providing you are in public property), excuse yourself and leave, with your loot. You can either sell it, offer it, keep it for yourself, trade it for stuff you want.

Heh, I work on a shipping dock, loading/unloading semi trucks all day. We can fill up two scrap pallet trailers a week that are hauled off to be recycled, but I bet most end up in landfill. I never considered them to become pieces of art.

A lot of those have been treated with all kinds of nasty shit so it's not a good idea to burn them.

Likewise please don't use them for flowerbeds or places for your pets to sleep.

I knew this.
Did you know that depending upon the corporation, cheaper prices may be binding if you are a worker (60% off fish for life).

The empty boxes of the parcels I receive stay for days if not even weeks. After my cat has shredded them to pieces I can get rid of them. Thus I can save on expensive cat toys.

Mine don't shred them so much. But I have Fort Box for them, and I change the box out once in a while when I get a box of the right size. :D

My mom's actually been trying to get her hands on a nice rustic looking pallet board for a DIY wall garden project.

Be aware that some of those pallets are treated with some pretty heinous pest control and anti-rot chemicals.

Yes, just don't burn them! I guess turning them into wallhangers won't poison you, just using them to cook food is a bad idea.

There's a place near where I live called the Scrap Exchange. Many big companies go there, drop off truckloads of unused materials, and then they are sold super cheaply to everyone else. Medical equipment, wood, ceramic tiles, you name it, it's all there. I'd encourage people who don't live near the RTP area of North Carolina to look for places like the Scrap Exchange around where they live, I'm sure there's SOMEONE out there who does this.
